Coastal Maine: Watercolor Travel Sketchbook

Maritime Details Near and Far

September 4-9, 2016

Welcome to WoodenBoat School!  Whether you sketch and watercolor entire landscapes or just the details at your fingertips, you’ll learn drawing and painting techniques that fit all skill levels - from novice to advanced.

Come prepared to work both indoors for instructional demos, and in a variety of outdoor locations – rocky beaches, docks and boatbuilding barns, etc.

Create a portable sketch and painting kit from the supplies below.

ART SUPPLIES

QUALITY COUNTS: When buying paper, paints and brushes...you don’t have to buy the most expensive...but you need GOOD QUALITY supplies. Do not buy “hobby” or “children’s” products. Ask for expert advice at the store. You are welcome to email me with questions: amyhosa@gmail.com

SKETCHBOOKS & PAPER CHOICES: DRAWING VS WATERCOLOR PAPER

SPIRAL BOUND sketchbooks are recommended (see bottom picture).              • SUGGESTED SIZE: 9x12” and 5x7”. Note: My personal travel journals include a mix of watercolor paper, or regular sketch paper, or tinted handmade paper...and each gives a different result (both limitations and assets). For this class, plain paper sketchbooks are fine for pencil and pen sketches with watercolor tints. However, if you want to have the most control with watercolors and use a variety of watercolor techniques, then bring watercolor paper sketchbooks, or blocks, or loose sheets of watercolor paper. Also, bring a sketchbook with regular sketch paper for notes and quick studies.

PAPER WEIGHTS: For watercolor paper, 140 lb. is standard (deckled surface). I use a quality paper, like ARCHES brand. Less expensive watercolor paper brands will do (they usually have more sizing that can be washed out for more control). For drawing paper sketchbooks, pick a sturdy paper and one that says it’s good for a variety of media.

PAINTS...can be a ready-made hard-pan watercolor set (dry cakes), or soft tubes. I travel with 2 very compact little paint sets with basic colors. Your paint set or tray needs to come with a lid (for travel). (See sample sets and sizes in photo).

COLORS  Maritime color palettes vary by personal taste and locale, so this is NOT a must-have list. The following are my basic colors:  cerulean blue, cobalt blue, Antwerp or indigo (a dark) blue, viridian green, sap green, alizaron crimson (cool red), cadmium orange, cadmium pale yellow, ochre, Naples yellow, burnt sienna, and opaque while. Substitute any colors per your personal taste, or use a ready-made set.  Do not buy hobby grade or kid’s paint sets.

BRUSHES  Natural hair or quality synthetic brushes: #4, 6, 8 (pointed watercolor style - not acrylic or oil brushes). Optional: a square tip brush or two - 1/2” or larger. If working on larger paper, bring bigger brushes. If you have other styles of brushes, bring them along. Note: Soft “hobby” brushes - do not hold enough paint, for a wash, and are floppy and sloppy, so be forewarned.

PENS & PENCILS

SOFT graphite/lead pencils, and soft erasers

• WATERPROOF felt tip pens, a variety  from fine to med points. Test for waterproof quality. Please, do not bring “sharpies” or “magic marker” brands or other marking pens that give off fumes.

IN ADDITION, BRING...

Pans and trays for mixing colors

Spritzer bottle with a fine mister spray (good for hot days in sun)

Water bottle, and water container

Rag or old towel

Tracing paper

Clip-board (to provide a portable working surface), big clips

Masking tape (1 inch, light tack - blue painters masking tape is fine)

OTHER SUPPLIES: For your own comfort: a water bottle, snacks, etc; a soft pad or low-small folding stool or chair to sit on; large brim hat to shade eyes, sunglasses, and sun block; a bag or backpack large enough to tote layers of clothes (vest/jacket) and art supplies. Optional: binoculars, camera, field guides.

ANY QUESTIONS…regarding supplies, your level of experience, or particular objectives of the class, please don’t hesitate to call or email!

Look forward to seeing you September 4th
